Tuesday, July 18, 2018 - 9th Micronesian Games, Yap Sports Complex, Yap, FSMTeam Guam Wrestling competed in the 2018 Micro Games with five athletes. The freestyle wrestling team missed their target of bringing home five gold medals as a contested call late in the match deterred the team’s opportunity.On day one, Michael Shinohara tried his luck in the Greco Roman 82kg discipline. Shinohara took the silver medal after failing to beat the same athlete he lost to in the first round during the finals. Day two produced four of the five gold medals Team Guam was aiming for.Paul Aguon earned Guam’s first medal in freestyle wrestling. Aguon, who lost to Palau’s Guy Delamau in the first round, came back to win the next three matches and earn his way to the 74kg finale. Aguon was leading in points when a controversial mishap by the referee enabled Delamau to pin Aguon with just seconds remaining in the match.Rckaela Aquino beat out Mayoleen Ionis of Pohnpei for the gold medal in the 57kg women’s division via pin while Mia-Lahnee Aquino was awarded the gold in her division as there were no opponents in her weight category.In the men’s 79kg division, John Rojas steam rolled over his opponents on his way to Gold beating JT Wichilbuch of Yap for the gold. Shinohara returned to the mat with determination as he walloped over his opponents in the 87kg division for the gold medal.Palau and Phonpei led Guam in the wrestling medal tally as they had sent athletes to compete in almost all divisions and disciplines including Greco-Roman, Freestyle and Beach Wrestling.
