Tugade tops 100m race at Ross and Sharon Irwin Meet

Saturday, March 27, 2018 - San Diego, California[gallery ids="https://guamnoc.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Regine-Tugade-2.jpg|,https://guamnoc.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Regine-Tugade.jpg|" type="rectangular"]SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Navy men's and women's track and field teams concluded its week-long spring break trip with a record-setting performance at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Meet in San Diego, Calif. hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University. The Mids' 4x100-meter relay teams for both the men's and women's squads broke the school records in the event.On the women's side, the 4x100m relay team of Amanda Henson (West Barnstable, Mass.), Chelsey Edwards (Schertz, Texas), Regine Tugade (Dededo, Guam), and Amanda Agana (Fayetteville, Ark.) posted a collective time of 46.63 to win the event and break the Navy school record of 47.06, which was set back in 2012. The men's relay team of Aaron Watson (Union City, Mich.), Devin Enslen (Alamogordo, N.M.), Evan Lexo (Groton, Mass.), and Demetrius Lanier (Palm Coast, Fla.) broke their own record of 40.52 with a new Navy-best time of 40.46."I saw a lot of continuity within the group and everyone working with a purpose this week," Navy Director of Track and Field Jamie Cook said following the meet. "The team just got better throughout the week. When you have good weather to train, things get a little easier. It was a good week."The men's and women's 4x100m teams both set school records, which was huge to set those records in the second meet of the year. There were a lot of good performances all the way across - too many to mention. There were improvements all across the board. The team is excited to get back to Annapolis and train with the momentum that we have built with the 10 days in California."In addition to the relay teams setting school records, the Midshipmen finished the meet with 28 top 2 finishes combined.In the running events, Tugade claimed first place in the 100m dash with a time of 12.06, while Enslen won the men's 100m with a time of 10.59. Lanier claimed second place in the 200m dash with a time of 21.44. In the women's 400m dash, Brittany Burg (Gasport, N.Y.) and Edwards finished 1-2 with times of 55.97 and 57.03, respectively, while on the men's side plebe Eric Hughey (Lee's Summit, Mo.) was the top finisher with a second-place time of 48.43. Agana was first in the women's 800m with a time of 2:14.84 and Justin Hyytinen (Farmington, Minn.) clocked a time of 1:53.34 in the men's 800m to finish in second. Claire Ostrowski (Virginia Beach Va.) was second in the 5,000m run with a time of 17:36.99Navy returns to action next weekend as the Midshipmen travel to Williamsburg, Va. for the annual William and Mary Invitational.
