PNG slips past Guam in Beach Volleyball

December 14, 2017 - Port Vila, VanuatuIn Women's Beach Volleyball, Papua New Guinea took off to a quick 6-1 lead against Guam behind aces by Bae. Guam cut the lead to within three on an ace by Kendra Byrd then changed sides trailing 9-5. Guam was able to bring it to within three points at the half then inched their way to a one-point deficit on errors by PNG. With the score at 13-12, PNG surged with strong plays, smashing balls and blocking effectively ending the set at 21-16.In the second set, Guam, jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, then increased it to 5-2 on a kill and ace by Tatiana Sablan. Two blocked shots brought PNG to within 1 point, but Guam was able to hold on to 8-6 lead. After falling behind by a point, Sablan scored three consecutive points to lead 11-10 at the half. In an intense second half of the set, the score knotted several times as neither team was able to obtain a clear advantage. Sablan’s kill and service prowess tied the game for the last time at 18 all. However, PNG used their strength and agility to win the set and match 21-19, thus ending Team Guam’s chance of moving into the semi-final matches. Byrd and Sablan compete in their last pool game on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at 10:40 a.m. at the Korman Volleyball Stadium (9:40 a.m. Guam time). Matches are streamed live at www.van2017.com.
