The inaugural MISO course of the quadrennial broughttogether executive, board, and athletes’ commission members from the newlyrecognized associate members: Guam Sport Climbing Federation, Guam FencingFederation, Guam Skate Network, Inc., Guam Modern Pentathlon, and the GuamE-Sports Federation.
Participants were introduced through an interactiveKahoot session, engaging everyone from the outset. Joey Miranda III thendetailed the workshop’s schedule and objectives. The first module, “Sports inthe Pacific,” explored the International Olympic Committee, Oceania NationalOlympic Committees, and the Guam National Olympic Committee. The presentationalso included an overview of the newly elected board and executive office,along with discussions on organizational purpose, membership and affiliation, athleteentourage, the quadrennial schedule, and eligibility and residency guidelines.
Module Two centered on group activities, with eachofficer assigned specific groups and tasks. These discussions addressed topicssuch as developing agendas, understanding the roles of a secretary-general,organizing annual general membership meetings, and strategies for conductingeffective meetings. Following this, participants regrouped with theirrespective federations for a role-playing exercise focused on listening andconflict resolution skills. Each federation identified a real-life issue they hadencountered, which another federation then acted out and resolved. Thisactivity provided valuable insights into conflict management, with allparticipants actively engaged.
The session concluded with a presentation by TaraTydingco, who outlined the Guam NOC’s requirements for annual generalmembership meetings. Her presentation emphasized adherence to the Charter,Constitution, and/or By-Laws, as well as guidelines for announcing thesemeetings publicly.
Melanie Torre led Module Six, beginning with an engaginggroup discussion on the governance of national federations. Participantsexplored their roles and responsibilities, analyzing how these contribute tothe success and development of their respective federations. Following thediscussion, they reviewed the structures of their national federations,focusing on the purpose and essential components of their Constitution andArticles of Incorporation.
Joey Miranda III then facilitated an activities review,underscoring the critical importance of understanding their duties as executiveand board members of recognized National Federations. He also highlighted therequirements set by the Guam National Olympic Committee and their respectiveInternational Federations.
