Guam NOC Hosts Engaging Third Session to Empower National Federation Representatives

Monday, March 24, 2025 – Maite, Guam

The Guam National Olympic Committee (NOC) proudly hosted the third session of its training program for National Federation representatives, delivering a comprehensive and interactive agenda aimed at enhancing their knowledge, skills, and effectiveness in sports administration.

The session commenced with vibrant discussions centered around recent activities and initiatives. Participants were then treated to an engaging Talk Show titled “Let’s Talk: Conversations with National Federation Executives”, hosted by Melanie Torre, Joey Miranda III, and Tara Tydingco. This dynamic segment revisited key learnings from the previous session and set the stage for the upcoming Q&A session with the Guam NOC Board. Conversations explored pivotal strategies for promoting the achievements and activities of the National Federation, leveraging digital platforms, ensuring compliance with the Guam NOC and Department of Revenue and Taxation's requirements, and mastering event and facility management processes.

Insightful Training Modules and Interactive Debates

Joey Miranda III led an in-depth exploration of Module 7: Planning for Development. This session spotlighted the Guam NOC's timelines for major upcoming events, including the Pacific Games, Pacific Mini Games, Micronesian Games, East Asian Youth Games, and Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. Participants delved into the administrative checklist, selection processes, database management, and the importance of sport development officers. Miranda also underscored initiatives to upskill officers, officials, and coaches, ensuring Guam’s preparedness for Games time.

Melanie Torre facilitated a lively debate exercise, dividing participants into four teams to tackle two thought-provoking topics:

1.      Should the local government play a larger role in funding sports development in Guam?

2.      Should the Guam NOC maintain its current regulation barring parents from coaching their child(ren) in recognized sporting events?

Each group presented affirmative and negative stances on the assigned topics, fostering critical thinking and robust discussions. The activity concluded with a review session, allowing participants to reflect on the arguments presented and the exercise's outcomes.

Empowerment and Safeguarding Initiatives

Tara Tydingco spearheaded an activity dedicated to the upskilling of National Federation officers, encouraging them to evaluate their current organizational structures and identify areas for improvement. This hands-on approach empowered participants to envision more efficient and impactful operations within their respective federations.

Sandra Miller, Guam NOC’s Safeguarding Officer, introduced the Safe Sport Program, highlighting vital measures to ensure the safety and well-being of athletes and sports participants across Guam.

Closing Reflections and Preparations for Board Engagement

The day concluded with a comprehensive review of the session’s activities, providing participants with valuable insights to carryforward. Joey Miranda III wrapped up the evening by outlining the schedule of deliveries and presentation requirements for Saturday’s formal engagement with the Guam NOC Board.

This impactful third session reinforced Guam NOC’s commitment to fostering excellence in sports administration and development across the island. With a focus on collaboration, innovation, and empowerment, the program continues to pave the way for a brighter future for Guam’s sports community.
