With a balanced mix of youth and experience, Team Guam pulled off two silver and three bronze medals in the Va’a competition of the 9th Micronesian Games held at the Yap lagoon and along the state’s coastal line.
Team Guam paddlers got off to a good start in the 1500 meters event, but a stronger Yap and Palau team earned gold and silver leaving Guam with a bronze. Palau’s women cruised to the 1500 meters gold, 19 seconds ahead of Team Guam who claimed silver. In the 500 meter course, Team Guam men reached the finals winning the repechage race.
The men pulled off the silver medal a second faster than Palau as Yap won gold in a decisive manner. The women’s team finished the short course race with a bronze medal behind Palau and Kosrae. The long distance course took its toll on Team Guam as the men finished in fourth place. The team struggled on the return as they were lapped making a tactical error using the inside line that caused them to fall behind.
The women battled their way to bronze, 57 seconds ahead of CNMI and 55 seconds behind second place Pohnpei, bringing the team medal total count to five.
